In a Covid-19 world, cloud adoption has become a necessity for businesses to survive. A cloud infrastructure provides businesses the accessibility and scalability to manage expanding – and changing – customer demand, while allowing businesses to still function during crises like the pandemic.Yet a number of businesses owners are still hesitant to migrate, with legitimate concerns on things like cost, complications and security.A recent webinar titled “<a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/live/?v=1158735564524676&amp;ref=watch_permalink" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Stay Calm and Just Cloud It!</a>” organised by MalaysiaKini and <a href="https://www.digitalnewsasia.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Digital News Asia</a>, hopes to reassure that the cloud isn’t as terrifying as it appears, even if it’s a little complex. The consensus, it seems, is that while cloud adoption and execution may be hampered by infrastructural limitations, the positives far outweigh the negatives.Panel speaker Chan Kee Siak, who is also CEO of cloud services provider <a href="https://www.exabytes.my/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Exabytes Network Sdn Bhd</a>, began by noting an aspect few businesses realise – that if you’re already using online tools like Facebook Live to promote a product, you’re already on the cloud.“In today’s world, without realising it, a lot of us – including MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) – are already on the cloud one way or another. Email services that we are using are part of the cloud. Storage services like iCloud and Dropbox are cloud services,” he says.What’s important, then is how companies can continue to embrace more and apply these tools to their day-to-day businesses to achieve better efficiency and, potentially, help reduce cost.Increased efficiencyPanellist Lim Chia Wei, who is executive director of <a href="https://www.mplusonline.com.my/macsecos/index.asp" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Malacca Securities</a>, shares how cloud adoption has enhanced the operations of the 57-year old stockbroking company. When she first joined the family business in 2013, the company was in the midst of transformation, with an eye on online trading.Lim oversaw the operation. Initially, much of it was about streamlining manual processes and the backend, enhancing their systems part by part to support automation.More recently, however, they’ve begun on a more full-fledged approach in digitalisation. This includes utilising cloud-based work productivity applications, as well as introducing digital marketing. And then, of course, there is M+ Online, Malacca Securities’ online stock trading platform.“I feel that we can proudly say we have successfully transformed from a very traditional broker into a key online player in the industry,” she says.“I think [the company] is definitely more efficiently run,” Lim adds. When she first joined, the brokerage primarily dealt in manual processes with tonnes of paperwork. “With technology, we are able to introduce automation and scale our processes, and we don’t have to hire people to handle volumes.”Growing adoption, but not enoughThe good news is that more businesses are clearly moving towards cloud adoption in Malaysia, especially in wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Chan himself observes that even stalls and traditional mom-and-pop shops have started having their own e-commerce presence.At the same time, businesses that are already utilising basic cloud services are looking into more cloud-based tools, such as cloud-based payroll applications and CRM (customer relationship management).The third panellist, Chin Chee Siong, who is the national vice president of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://smemalaysia.org/">SME Association Malaysia</a>, offered a more complete perspective. His organisation recently released a survey on the status of Malaysian SMEs after the movement control order (MCO) period. The association surveyed 1,713 business owners on the measures they have taken after the MCO.It found that only 43% of the SMEs surveyed have embarked on digitalisation. While this number could be higher, what’s intriguing is that 69% of them considered the journey to be a success. 49% of those who haven’t started digitalisation expressed interest to do so, with a majority intending to begin in the next three to six months.“It is clear that most of them [SMEs] have taken the journey of digitalisation, but this is not enough,” stresses Chin, a past-chairman of Pikom as well.First stepsSo how should an enterprise begin on their cloud journey? For Lim, Malacca Securities’ journey was approached in a hybrid manner – it begun internally, with work processes shifting to cloud applications and the utilisation of productivity tools for their internal workflow. They used it even more during the MCO period, as it promotes collaboration even in a work-from-home environment.The gradual digitisation eventually expanded towards other departments such as human resources. Today, even Malacca Securities’ processes such as health benefits, utilise cloud applications.Lim, however, says that cost-effectiveness alone can’t be a key driver of cloud adoption. “You have to look at it from all perspectives – on how does it make your business more efficient, or how it increases time to market. All of these have to be part and parcel of the consideration process for companies who want to move to the cloud,” she advices.Chin says that digitalisation has its difficulties, but it mainly stems from enterprises not understanding the cost of digitalisation, with many perceiving it as expensive. However, as Chin notes, the cost of digitalisation is increasingly lower, especially compared to a few years prior.“For many cloud-based services, you don’t need to pay a large sum upfront – you just subscribe to the services that you need,” Chin notes. Essentially, the barrier of entry is now much lower.For Chan, the actual challenge in cloud adoption isn’t cost, nor is it a trust issue. “It’s about infrastructure and connectivity. Are they stable and fast enough to support the business and to adopt more cloud services. Infrastructure plays a very critical role.”Still, it can be said that the infrastructure in Malaysia for cloud adoption is more or less in place. If anything, Alibaba Cloud being the first international cloud player to set up their infrastructure in Malaysia is an indicator that the country has the ground work laid out. It’s also a showcase on the importance of a cloud infrastructure. According to Chan, it can be observed that Alibaba’s arrival is helping the further development of the whole e-commerce ecosystem that is heavily reliant on cloud infrastructure.There’s no denying that technical, infrastructure, and cost barriers are getting lower. Right now, with cloud adoption being a matter of survival, it’s best to keep calm and start on the digitalisation journey.Partner with us! This Penang born businesswoman is currently working in Sales and Marketing Executive while juggling her business in between her travel agency called “Ayuh Liburan” and selling her homemade Sambal paste, “sambals.digha”Her strong interest in both travel and cooking sparks the idea of doing business in that area. “ I love travelling and cooking. If you look at my Instagram feeds, most of the contents are my travelling photos to countries in South East Asia and my casual hunt for the best food in hidden places. I love sharing photos of new hip cafes and my cooking.”Started travelling Solo as early as 18 years, she began saving her pocket money just to travel. Her very idea of travelling is to explore cultures and experiencing backpacking. Her passion in travelling projects her way into creating her very own travel agent that shares travel packages to Bali and Yogyakarta. “I love to explore and to challenge myself. The Ayuh Liburan idea came up as I frequently travel to Indonesia. I knew Indonesia has a special place in my heart as I kept choosing it as my go to holiday destination. In future, we plan to add Japan to the list.” Nadzirah added. Before Covid 19 hits, Nadzirah will make a trip back and forth to Indonesia every 3 month once. The reason for this is to inspect and follow up with her business partner while ensuring that clients are satisfied with the trip. Her constant travel to Indonesia allows her to discover hidden gems and underrated places before suggestion and opening the trip to the clients. “Clients paid for the trip so I want to make sure they are satisfied and happy with the trip. Sometimes, clients would want to amend and add additional places to the package so I personally will sit down with them and suggest to them unique locations according to their preference” said Nadzirah. To date, over 300 clients have joined and uses Ayuh Liburan’s package from company’s trip, family holidays, grouping vacation to honeymooners. Group as small as 5-10 pax to a bigger number of 20 to 60 pax of people. However, the ongoing global pandemic takes a toll Nadzirah’s “Ayuh Liburan” ever since the Movement Restriction Order (MCO) implemented in Malaysia where Malaysian is banned for going out of the country for holiday travels.“As of now, Ayuh Liburan’s operation has to be put on hold so we have stopped posting ads on our Instagram feed. We will only resume the business once the Covid 19 is gone and when we are allowed to travel again.” Nadzirah added. With the current pandemic, this foodie lady boss decided to come up with a business that is able to cater to the demand despite the Restriction Movement Order being carried out. “I started joining my aunties selling Durian at Taman Medan. There was extra durian leftover so I decided to make Sambal paste with the fermented durians. Initially I wanted my family and friends to taste it. There was no intention of selling it at all! I love sambal. I put sambal in everything I eat. For me, life is not complete without it!” chuckled her. She said that the Sambal recipe is passed down from her late grandmother who used to prepare sambal every time she visits her. She managed to learn how to prepare “Sambal Tumis” and “Sambal Tempoyak” from her. Nadzirah added that she then starts to sell the Sambal deliberately in her housing area and that is when “sambals.digha” were born. There were demands on the neighbourhood and just so happened that when she promoted her Sambal on the residential’s WhatsApp group, one of her neighbours, celebrity couple Syatilla Melvin and Shaheizy Sam, were interested to purchase her Sambal. Syatilla who has 3 million followers on Instagram shared the Sambal on her InstaStory voluntarily and the sale blew up.“It is a very satisfying feeling when customers buy the product and genuinely love it especially when the recipe is from my late grandmother. Customers will usually tag us on their Instagram profile and share it among their followers and thankfully, the feedback and responses are all positive.” she shared. Selling F&amp;B items are not easy as quality controls need to be strict. “ Selling sambal is very fragile and delicate. Even if you close the lid while it is hot, the sambal can easily rot. The setting price also has its highs and lows as ingredients such as Tempoyak (fermented durian) varies according to season. The price of Petai (bitter bean) and anchovies also differ hence I need to standardize the unit price of the product. ” she added. For her first month, Nadzirah targeted to sell 500 jars of sambal and managed to exceed 1,500 jars instead.“I have agents selling it all over Malaysia from Selangor to the northern states in Penang and Kedah. My advertising and promotion for sambal.digha are solely through Instagram. I also have a production team that helps me out with the Sambal production. This team assists me in creating R&amp;D for new sambal flavour to produce in future.” Nadzirah's inspiration is her late grandfather. Growing up with him, she witnessed how he has worked very hard despite being financially inadequate to support the family by coming up with many businesses. “Atuk breeds ikan keli (catfish) back in Kampung and eventually become a catfish supplier to a few districts in Kedah such as Sungai Petani, Yan and Kuala Muda. He also runs a paddy field and other businesses as well. His determination to feed the family inspires me and I look up to him dearly.” she explained. When asked on her future business plan, she said that she wishes to upgrade both of her businesses to the next level. “I will be adding more sambal flavour to the market and the flavours are still under R&amp;D. As for Ayuh Liburan, I will wait until the Covid cases have dispersed until I can reopen the trips. I hope that all of my clients under Ayuh Liburan will be pleased with the services and that they are able to experience and enjoy their holiday trip as much as I do. My wish is that both sambal.digha &amp; Ayuh Liburan operate smoothly and then I can continue to share the earnings with my fellow agents

EP 1: Better Monitoring Using loT and Big Data

Hing Zhe Lee - artist &amp; songwriter Hing Zhe Lee who is based in Los Angeles, California has always been passionate about music. Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, he graduated from Los Angeles College of Music (LACM) in 2019.“I started singing when I was 7, my grandmother used to request songs from me and I would sing to her. When I was 10, I was in a school choir, and then I picked up the guitar when I was 14 because I was researching on Youtube about bands when I came across Metallica and thought wow, that’s cool. I want to be like that. There is when my passion towards music started like creating guitar parts and lyrics and all that kind of stuff. Family members have always been encouraging towards Hing as his parents play music instruments. “My mom used to play violin then she stopped. My dad will once in a while pull out the harmonica and play it. They have always been supportive because their son has something that he is passionate about which is music and not bad stuff.”Do you always want to do music?Starting off with following the “ideal” normal path of taking business and accounts after school at Sunway College, Hing then worked at a coffee company. Halfway through he found out that he had no passion towards it. “I did not enjoy it. I had a long hard thought about it and discussed it with my parents. I told them I did not want to do this. I can’t and I don’t like it. That is when I decided that music is for me. It has been a part of me , and it is something that I love and have passion for: writing music, playing the guitar. That’s when I decided to leave everything I had in Malaysia to come here to pursue my musical career and I went to school here for music.The timing was a little odd. The day that my parents decided I should pursue music is the day when my grandmother passed away. My father was skeptical of me going to the US to do music because of the stigma. The day that my grandmother passed away, I was devastated as I was really close to my Grandma. So, I feel the need to write something. I wanted to write a tribute to my Grandma that says I love and misses her. My dad heard the song piece and was impressed with it. He said it was pretty good. Hesaid he was not going to pretend that he understands it, but it is good and was the right decision to let me go to the US to do music.”Music influences “Two of my biggest influences would be Metallica because they are the reason I picked up the guitar and I have always wanted to play in a rock band, in a huge stadium, it's like “THE DREAM”. The second would be the Taiwanese singer, Wang Lee Hom. That was my musical inspiration when I was a little kid before I picked up the guitar. I wanted to be like that, like an artist. Right now, I am mostly a songwriter. I write music to pitch to movies and series, I write with other local artists. Sometimes a producer needs a session singer, or a guitar player, I can do that.”Covid 19 took a toll on the music activities as everything is shut down in the US. “I cannot personally go out and my band cannot meet up so now I am doing a little bit of everything. Pitching, mostly song writing, composing, and proposing it to movies and series. As of now, I’m working on four folk indie songs to be pitched for an upcoming comedy movie about two brothers. I’m also working on my personal music with the help of a producer friend that will be releasing a song within next month.” How do you get inspiration for your music?By anything that inspires me. I can play a video game about samurais and get inspired from there. In fact, I have written about four-five songs from a video game. Just driving down the freeway here in the US with my girlfriend, something as simple as that. Literally anything can inspire me to write a song. What do you want to present to the world? I like to show my roots through my music. I am not afraid to incorporate Chinese melodies, Indian rhythms and even the sound of Malay Kompang into my music. I like to blend something percussive and aggressive, traditional yet modern. That’s what I feel is different compared to other artists in the US. Ever since I came to the US, I have always wanted to incorporate these sounds. When I create music, I want to show people a little piece of me that you can’t see. I want to introduce the people here where I am from. I want to show all this different culture that I grew up with such as the Malay and Indian culture to blend it all together to show who I am. Do you have a band?They are all based in LA. They are not from Malaysians and from all over the world. Our differences are big from culture and sound. My guitarist is from Mexico. The way he plays is tasteful with a mexican vibe. My bassist on the other hand is from Hong Kong, he is trained in Jazz that adds a different element into my music. The drummer is American. Stylistically I think he and I are the most similar because we are both “metal” guys. He understands the rhythm and he is really good. Very versatile and that’s how our band is. How was the acceptance of Americans towards your music?Quite accepting with the experimentation. They’ll go “It’s cool and where do you get all this rhythm and weird sounds,” They don’t understand how and where did I get the concept from. So from here, they are introduced that Malaysia is a multicultural country consisting of different races. The best moment in your career.Being so close and working with so many big names in the industry that has written for Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Flo Rida, Cheryl Cole. With all these opportunities and these people I have worked with is something that I could only dream of doing back then before I came here. What are the challenges now?My challenge would be being a foreigner on a student visa. This is because there are a lot of limitations with all the other people that I am competing with. We as foreigners cannot look for jobs and we had to go through a whole other process to be able to just get a visa. Prior to Covid, usually me and the band would go out and perform to show people who we are because sometimes it is really hard to be able for people to see the real us. For example we hear music on YouTube and Spotify, it sounds nice but alot of the videos and sound are being compressed. The experience of listening to the artist live in person is very different. All the little details of the music that we cannot hear like the little congas and shakers which are prominent in the music that we cannot convey in the online platform medium. When we play music, you can feel the “umph” which made the listeners want to know more about the performers. The feeling will make you love them even more. What do you think about the Malaysian music scene as compared to the US? The music scene in Malaysia feels like home. It feels like we are all in this together as though we are a unison. We create music together then we write and it is very like home whereas here it is very industrialized. Music here of course is seen as creative art, but it is focused on business since it is one of the biggest industries in the US. A song in Malaysia might be something close to your heart, because you are passionate about some person whereas here it is just numbers. Which Malaysian artist do you look up to?Yuna. Music is great and she has done something that not alot Malaysian have done which is to create a legacy that is so big that it is international. People she works with like Usher and having a billboard in New York. It is amazing and made me really proud to see a Malaysian from my country to achieve that. She is known globally. Some of the artists that I look up to are Projector Band, like a “jiwang” (romantic) rock band. I love the emotion when they sing. Then we have the OG, Dato’ Sri Siti Nurhaliza, the first Malaysian pop star that I like. A close friend of mine, Reshma, a Malaysian artist who got 3rd place in Akademi Fantasia as well, pushes me to do music. I have worked with her by writing songs and played the guitar for her. What’s next for you? What are your targets?The “Big Dream '' is my performance of my work being played at stadiums, big theatres, in front of thousands of people. Connecting with thousands of people worldwide and being able to work with “big” people. The ultimate dream.As of now I will continue to work on improving myself to be better in guitar playing, in vocals and eventually if Covid blows over, I want to be able to show again the people here where I come from.Best advice given to youFrom one of my teachers in the US, “nothing is impossible because every barrier is just a hurdle. If you fall down, stand up and come back stronger. There is a point that you cannot give up and that you have to keep pushing forward. If you push hard enough, you might find something at the place you want to go. It really resonates to me. I push my boundaries to make myself relevant in such an impossible industry because music is hard. It’s coming out of nothing. Today I may not have a song that will make you cry, but tomorrow I might come out with a song that touches you. It’s such an impossible thing with music. It is literally making something out of nothing.

Woodie Pie is a personalized online jewelry store that sells jewelry made out of breast milk established in November 2015. They specialize in making formula to stabilize and preserve the breast milk so that the milk for the jewelry would not rot or melt over time. Founded by two sisters, Heidi and Cassandra, the idea sparked one day when they received a special request from a customer who wanted to present his wife with a gift. We started our very first breastmilk jewelry from a special request of a husband who wanted to surprise his wife. We browsed the internet and we found there was someone turning their breastmilk to jewelry.”It is from this discovery that the two sisters decided to experiment and formulated their own formula in order to produce quality jewelry. ‘The test was run at home and we formulated it with construction materials in the formulation (as Heidi’s husband is in the Construction line) and we got our breastmilk stone born with some test we went through. Of course we run some tests to improve the breastmilk stones from time to time.” Cassandra explained. Initially, during their time selling breast milk soap, they learn that most of the orders come from oversupply mothers. This is where they realized they have to cater to their products towards undersupply mothers. “Some customers actually wanted to do keepsakes but they only can get breastmilk soap which can last not more than 1 or 2 years. Jewelry can last longer. Also, we only need around 5ml for 1 process on breastmilk stone. This is very little requirement of breastmilk compared to breastmilk soap making (100ml to 200ml breastmilk needed for a soap bar). Therefore, oversupply and undersupply breastfeeding mothers are eligible to get their own breast milk jewelry.”The idea of keeping breastmilk jewellery is a connection that the mothers can relate and remember during their motherhood journey. Instead of getting normal jewellery, mothers can wear their own DNA jewellery instead.“We hope our breastmilk jewelleries and DNA Keepsakes can reach every breastfeeding mother as breastfeeding only stays for a certain period. Mothers can pass down their breast milk jewelleries with their own DNA to their next generation.”Some of the types of jewellery that they are selling are cufflink, earrings, locket, brooch, bracelet, necklace, and pendants. The jewellery sold are sold according to the wide range of materials and the designs are shown on their website where each is cost at a different price. Breastmilk necklace “There are many jewelry makers who claim they are able to do the same as what we are doing. Well, we find out many of them are using DIY kits to process your precious breast milk stone. If you have tried to DIY your breast milk jewelry at home, you will find out the sign of unstable condition will show up in a couple of weeks.”The research and development methods that they use managed to reduce the amount of bubbles formed in the jewellery, preserving and solidifying the breast milk while cleaning and polishing the finished product. “We have our own recipe on breast milk preservation whether you are sending us fresh or expired breast milk. We are able to work on expired breast milk and the stone will not turn brown or black. The machines and equipment we are using is to ensure that the jewelry will become a stable chemical compound.”Woodie Pie’s mission in creating quality jewellery for breastfeeding mothers is emphasized therefore the making process is done as detailed as possible. Breastmilk stoneSisters Heidi and Cassandra believe that breastfeeding mothers had to deal with criticism about their choice to breastfeed.“Criticism from strangers happens occasionally and some are facing criticism from family members and it can be much harder to handle especially when they make negative comments about breastfeeding.
